a7cdb602e1 db::commitlog: Fix sanity check error on race between segment flushing and oversized alloc
Fixes #27992

When doing a commit log oversized allocation, we lock out all other writers by grabbing
the _request_controller semaphore fully (max capacity).
We thereafter assert that the semaphore is in fact zero. However, due to how things work
with the bookkeep here, the semaphore can in fact become negative (some paths will not
actually wait for the semaphore, because this could deadlock).

Thus, if, after we grab the semaphore and execution actually returns to us (task schedule),
new_buffer via segment::allocate is called (due to a non-fully-full segment), we might
in fact grab the segment overhead from zero, resulting in a negative semaphore.

The same problem applies later when we try to sanity check the return of our permits.

Fix is trivial, just accept less-than-zero values, and take same possible ltz-value
into account in exit check (returning units)

Added whitebox (special callback interface for sync) unit test that provokes/creates
the race condition explicitly (and reliably).

We're providing additional information in error messages when throwing
an exception related to data corruption: when a segment is truncated
and when it's content is invalid. That might prove helpful when debugging.

3feb759943 everywhere: use utils::chunked_vector for list of mutations
Currently, we use std::vector<*mutation> to keep
a list of mutations for processing.
This can lead to large allocation, e.g. when the vector
size is a function of the number of tables.

Use a chunked vector instead to prevent oversized allocations.

`perf-simple-query --smp 1` results obtained for fixed 400MHz frequency

ee36358a60 db: remove unused includes
these unused includes are identified by clang-include-cleaner.
after auditing the source files, all of the reports have been
confirmed.

please note, since we have `using seastar::shared_ptr` in
`seastarx.h`, this renders `#include <seastar/core/shared_ptr.hh>`
unnecessary if we don't need the full definition of `seastar::shared_ptr`.

so, in this change, all the unused includes are removed. but there are
some headers which are actually used, while still being identified by
this tool. these includes are marked with "IWYU pragma: keep".

b5d167699c commitlog: Fix buffer_list_bytes not updated correctly
Fixes #20862

With the change in 60af2f3cb2 the bookkeep
for buffer memory was changed subtly, the problem here that we would
shrink buffer size before we after flush use said buffer's size to
decrement the buffer_list_bytes value, previously inc:ed by the full,
allocated size. I.e. we would slowly grow this value instead of adjusting
properly to actual used bytes.

Test included.

05bf2ae5d7 commitlog: Handle oversized entries
Refs #18161

Yet another approach to dealing with large commitlog submissions.

We handle oversize single mutation by adding yet another entry
type: fragmented. In this case we only add a fragment (aha) of
the data that needs storing into each entry, along with metadata
to correlate and reconstruct the full entry on replay.

Because these fragmented entries are spread over N segments, we
also need to add references from the first segment in a chain
to the subsequent ones. These are released once we clear the
relevant cf_id count in the base.
                 *
This approach has the downside that due to how serialization etc
works w.r.t. mutations, we need to create an intermediate buffer
to hold the full serialized target entry. This is then incrementally
written into entries of < max_mutation_size, successively requesting
more segments.

On replay, when encountering a fragment chain, the fragment is
added to a "state", i.e. a mapping of currently processing
frag chains. Once we've found all fragments and concatenated
the buffers into a single fragmented one, we can issue a
replay callback as usual.

Note that a replay caller will need to create and provide such
a state object. Old signature replay function remains for tests
and such.

This approach bumps the file format (docs to come).

To ensure "atomicity" we both force syncronization, and should
the whole op fail, we restore segment state (rewinding), thus
discarding data all we wrote.

55d6afda6e commitlog: Add optional max lifetime parameter to cl instance
If set, any remaining segment that has data older than this threshold
will request flushing, regardless of data pressure. I.e. even a system
where nothing happends will after X seconds flush data to free up the
commit log.

05ff32ebf9 db: commitlog: add min_position()
Add a helper function which returns the minimum replay position
across all existing or future commitlog segments.
Only positions greater or equal to it can be replayed on the next reboot.

We will use this helper in a future patch to garbage collect some cleanup
metadata which refers to replay positions.

Allows waiting for all previous and pending segment deletes to finish.
Useful if a caller of `discard_completed_segments` (i.e. a memtable
flush target) not only wants to ensure segments are clean and released,
but thoroughly deleted/recycled, and hence no treat to resurrecting
data on crash+restart.

75a8be5b87 commitlog.hh: Fix numeric constant for file format version 3 to be actual '3'
Fixes #16277

When the PR for 'tagged pages' was submitted for RFC, it was assumed that PR #12849
(compression) would be committed first. The latter introduced v3 format, and the
format in #12849 (tagged pages) was assumed to have to be bumped to 4.

This ended up not the case, and I missed that the code went in with file format
tag numeric value being '4' (and constant named v3).

While not detrimental, it is confusing, and should be changed asap (before anything
depends on files with the tag applied).

60af2f3cb2 Merge 'New commitlog file format using tagged pages' from Calle Wilund
Prototype implementation of format suggested/requested by @avikivity:

Divides segments into disk-write-alignment sized pages, each tagged with segment ID + CRC of data content.
When read, we both verify sector integrity (CRC) to detect corruption, as well as matching ID read with expected one.

If the latter mismatches we have a prematurely terminated segment (read truncation), which, depending on whether the CL is
written in batch or periodic mode, as well as explicit sync, can mean data loss.

Note: all-zero pages are treated as kosher, both to align with newly allocated segments, as well as fully terminated (zero-page) ones.

Note: This is a preview/RFC - the rest of the file format is not modified. At least parts of entry CRC could probably be removed, but I have not done so yet (needs some thinking).

Note: Some slight abstraction breaks in impl. and probably less than maximal efficiency.

e29bf6f9e8 commitlog: Implement new format using CRC:ed sectors
Breaks the file into individually tagged + crc:ed pages.
Each page (sized as disk write alignment) gets a trailing
12-byte metadata, including CRC of the first page-12 bytes,
and the ID of the segment being written.

When reading, each page read is CRC:ed and checked to be part
of the expected segment by comparing ID:s. If crc is broken,
we have broken data. If crc is ok, but ID does not match, we
have a prematurely terminated segment (truncated), which, depending
on whether we use batch mode or not, implied data loss.

862f4f2ed3 commitlog_replayer: differentiate between truncated file and corrupt entries
Refs #11845

When replaying, differentiate between the two cases for failure we have:
 - A broken actual entry - i.e. entry header/data does not hold up to
   crc scrutiny
 - Truncated file - i.e. a chunk header is broken or unreadable. This can
   be due to either "corruption" (i.e. borked write, post-corruption, hw
   whatever), or simply an unterminated segment.

The difference is that the former is recoverable, the latter is not.
We now signal and report the two separately. The end result for a user
is not much different, in either case they imply data loss and the
need for repair. But there is some value in differentiating which
of the two we encountered.

Modifies and adds test cases.

560d3c17f0 commitlog: Add keeping track of approximate lowest GC clock for CF entries
Adds a lowest timestamp of GC clock whenever a CF is added to a CL segment
first. Because GC clock is wall clock time and only connected to TTL (not
cell/row timestamps), this gives a fairly accurate view of GC low bounds
per segment.

Includes of course a function to get the all-segment lowest per CF.

66e43912d6 code: Switch to seastar API level 7
In that level no io_priority_class-es exist. Instead, all the IO happens
in the context of current sched-group. File API no longer accepts prio
class argument (and makes io_intent arg mandatory to impls).

So the change consists of
- removing all usage of io_priority_class
- patching file_impl's inheritants to updated API
- priority manager goes away altogether
- IO bandwidth update is performed on respective sched group
- tune-up scylla-gdb.py io_queues command

The first change is huge and was made semi-autimatically by:
- grep io_priority_class | default_priority_class
- remove all calls, found methods' args and class' fields

Patching file_impl-s is smaller, but also mechanical:
- replace io_priority_class& argument with io_intent* one
- pass intent to lower file (if applicatble)

Dropping the priority manager is:
- git-rm .cc and .hh
- sed out all the #include-s
- fix configure.py and cmakefile

The scylla-gdb.py update is a bit hairry -- it needs to use task queues
list for IO classes names and shares, but to detect it should it checks
for the "commitlog" group is present.

5aea6938ae commitlog: Introduce and use comitlog sched group
Nowadays all commitlog code runs in whatever sched group it's kicked
from. Since IO prio classes are going to be inherited from the current
sched group the commitlog IO loops should be moved into commitlog sched
group, not inherit a "random" one.

There are currently two places that need correct context for IO -- the
.cycle() method and segments replenisher.

a729c2438e commitlog: Make get_segments_to_replay on-demand
Refs #11237

Don't store segments found on init scan in all shard instances,
instead retrieve (based on low time-pos for current gen) when
required. This changes very little, but we at last don't store
pointless string lists in shards 1 to X, and also we can potentially
ask for the list twice. More to the point, goes better hand-in-hand
with the semantics of "delete_segments", where any file sent in is
considered candidate for recycling, and included in footprint.

688fd31e64 commitlog: Add counters for actual pending allocations + segment wait
Fixes #9367

The CL counters pending_allocations and requests_blocked_memory are
exposed in graphana (etc) and often referred to as metrics on whether
we are blocking on commit log. But they don't really show this, as
they only measure whether or not we are blocked on the memory bandwidth
semaphore that provides rate back pressure (fixed num bytes/s - sortof).

However, actual tasks in allocation or segment wait is not exposed, so
if we are blocked on disk IO or waiting for segments to become available,
we have no visible metrics.

While the "old" counters certainly are valid, I have yet to ever see them
be non-zero in modern life.

fcb8d040e8 treewide: use Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) license identifiers
Instead of lengthy blurbs, switch to single-line, machine-readable
standardized (https://spdx.dev) license identifiers. The Linux kernel
switched long ago, so there is strong precedent.

Three cases are handled: AGPL-only, Apache-only, and dual licensed.
For the latter case, I chose (AGPL-3.0-or-later and Apache-2.0),
reasoning that our changes are extensive enough to apply our license.

The changes we applied mechanically with a script, except to
licenses/README.md.

91163fcfa5 commitlog: make it possible to provide base segment ID
Adds a configuration option to the commitlog: base_segment_id. When
provided, the commitlog uses this ID as a base of its segment IDs
instead of calculating it based on the number of milliseconds between
the epoch and boot time.

This is needed in order for the feature which allows to wait for hints
to be replayed to work - it relies on the replay positions monotonically
increasing. Endpoint managers periodically re-creates its commitlog
instance - if it is re-created when there are no segments on disk,
currently it will choose the number of milliseconds between the epoch
and boot time, which might result in segments being generated with the
same IDs as some segments previously created and deleted during the same
runtime.

3633c077be commitlog/config: Make hard size enforcement false by default + add config opt
Refs #9053

Flips default for commitlog disk footprint hard limit enforcement to off due
to observed latency stalls with stress runs. Instead adds an optional flag
"commitlog_use_hard_size_limit" which can be turned on to in fact do enforce it.

Sort of tape and string fix until we can properly tweak the balance between
cl & sstable flush rate.

aa2df75321 commitlog: add an option to allow going over size limit
This commit adds an option which, when turned on, allows the commitlog
to go over configured size limit. After reaching the limit, commitlog
will be more conservative with its usage of the disk space - for
example, it won't increase the segment reserve size or reuse recycled
segments. Most importantly, it won't block writes until the space used
by the commitlog goes down.

This change is necessary for hinted handoff to keep its current
behavior. Hinted handoff does not let the commitlog free segments
itself - instead, it re-creates it every 10 seconds and manually deletes
segments after all hints are sent from a segment.

Commitlog disk limit was previously a "soft" limit, in that we allowed allocating new segments, even if we were over
disk usage max. This would also cause us sometimes to create new segments and delete old ones, if badly timed in
needing and releasing segments, in turn causing useless disk IO for pre-allocation/zeroing.

This patch set does:
* Make limit a hard limit. If we have disk usage > max, we wait for delete or recycle.
* Make flush threshold configurable. Default is ask for flush when over 50% usage. (We do not wait for results)
* Make flush "partial". We flush X% of the used space (used - thres/2), and make the rp limit accordingly. This means we will try to clear the N oldest segments, not all. I.e. "lighter" flush. Of course, if the CL is wholly dominated by a single CF, this will not really help much. But when > 1 cf is used, it means we can skip those not having unflushed data < req rp.
* Force more eager flush/recycle if we're out of segments

Note: flush threshold is not exposed in scylla config (yet). Because I am unsure of wording, and even if it should.
Note: testing is sparse, esp. in regard to latency/timeouts added in high usage scenarios. While I can fairly easily provoke "stalls" (i.e. forced waiting for segments to free up) with simple C-S, it is hard to say exactly where in a more sane config (I set my limits looow) latencies will start accumulating.

Allows N mutations to be written "atomically" (i.e. in the same
call). Either all are added to segement, or none.

Returns rp_handle vector corresponding to the call vector.

5fcc2066ed commitlog: Make commitlog entries optionally multi-entry
Allows writing more than one blob of data using a single
"add" call into segment. The old call sites will still
just provide a single entry.

To ensure we can determine the health of all the entries
as a unit, we need to wrap them in a "parent" entry.
For this, we bump the commitlog segment format and
introduce a magic marker, which if present, means
we have entries in entry, totalling "size" bytes.
We checksum the entra header, and also checksum
the individual checksums of each sub-entry (faster).
This is added as a post-word.

When parsing/replaying, if v2+ and marker, we have to
read all entries + checksums into memory, verify, and
_then_ we can actually send the info to caller.

b955793088 hinted handoff: disable warnings about segments left on disk
When a mutation is written to the commitlog, a rp_handle object is
returned which keeps a reference to commitlog segment. A segment is
"dirty" when its reference count is not zero, otherwise it is "clean".

When commitlog object is being destroyed, a warning is being printed
for every dirty segment. On the other hand, clean segments are deleted.

In case of standard mutation writing path, the rp_handle moves
responsibility for releasing the reference to the memtable to which the
mutation is written. When the memtable is flushed to disk, all
references accumulated in the memtable are released. In this context, it
makes sense to warn about dirty segments, because such segments contain
mutations that are not written to sstables, and need to be replayed.

However, hinted handoff uses a different workflow - it recreates a
commitlog object periodically. When a hint is written to commitlog, the
rp_handle reference is not released, so that segments with hints are not
deleted when destroying the commitlog. When commitlog is created again,
we get a list of saved segments with hints that we can try to send at a
later time.

Although this is intended behavior, now that releasing the hints
commitlog is done properly, it causes the mentioned warning to
periodically appear in the logs.

This patch adds a parameter for the commitlog that allows to disable
this warning. It is only used when creating hinted handoff commitlogs.

623071020e commitlog: change variadic stream in read_log_file to future<struct>
Since seastar::streams are based on future/promise, variadic streams
suffer the same fate as variadic futures - deprecation and eventual
removal.

This patch therefore replaces a variadic stream in commitlog::read_log_file()
with a non-variadic stream, via a helper struct.

Tests: unit (dev)
