... and replace it with boolean enable_tablets option. All the places
in the code are patched to check the latter option instead of the former
feature.
The option is OFF by default, but the default scylla.yaml file sets this
to true, so that newly installed clusters turn tablets ON.

Currently, the tests in test/cql-pytest can be run against both ScyllaDB and Cassandra.
Running the test for either will first output the test results, and subsequently
print the stdout output of the process under test. Using the command line
option --omit-scylla-output it is possible to disable this print for Scylla,
but it is not possible for tests run against Cassandra.
This change adds the option to suppress output for Cassandra tests, too. By default,
the stdout of the Cassandra run will still be printed after the test results, but
this can now be disabled with --omit-scylla-output

Running test/cql-pytest/run now defaults to enabling the "tablets"
experimental feature when running Scylla - and tests detect this and
use this feature as appropriate. This is the correct default going
forward, but in the short term it would be nice to also have an
option to easily do a manual test run *without* tablets.
So this patch adds a "--vnodes" option to the test/cql-pytest/run
script. This option causes "run" to run Scylla without enabling the
"tablets" experimental feature.

Code that executed only when consistent_cluster_management=false is
removed. In particular, after this patch:
- raft_group0 and raft_group_registry are always enabled,
- raft_group0::status_for_monitoring::disabled becomes unused,
- topology tests can only run with consistent_cluster_management.
Scylla's output is often unnecessary to debug a failed test, or even
detrimental because one has to scroll back in the terminal after each
test run, to see the actual test's output. Add an option,
--omit-scylla-output, which when present on the command line of `run`,
the output of scylla will be omitted from the test output.
Also, to help discover this option (and others), don't run the tests
when either -h or --help is present on the command line. Just invoke
pytest (with said option) and exit.
Before this patch, all scripts which use test/cql-pytest/run.py
looked for the Scylla executable as their first step. This is usually
the right thing to do, except in two cases where Scylla is *not* needed:
1. The script test/cql-pytest/run-cassandra.
2. The script test/alternator/run with the "--aws" option.
So in this patch we change run.py to only look for Scylla when actually
needed (the find_scylla() function is called). In both cases mentioned
above, find_scylla() will never get called and the script can work even
if Scylla was never built.

Unlike other experimental feature we want to raft to be optional even
after it leaves experimental mode. For that we need to have a separate
option to enable it. The patch adds the binary option "consistent-cluster-management"
for that.
In commit afab1a97c6, we added
test_tools.py - tests for the various tools embedded in the Scylla
executable. These tests need to know where the Scylla executable is,
and also where its sstables are stored. For this, the commit added two
test parameters - "--scylla-path" and "--workdir" - with which the
"run" script communicated this knowledge to the test.
However, that implementation meant that these tests only work if the
test was run via the test/cql-pytest/run script - they won't work if
the user ran Scylla/pytest manually, or through some other script not
passing these options.
This patch drops the "--scylla-path" and "--workdir" parameters, and
instead the test figures out this information on its own:
1. To find the Scylla executable, we begin by looking (using the
local_process_id(cql) function from the previous patch) for a
local process which listens to our CQL connection, and then find
the executable's path using /proc.
2. To find the Scylla data directory (which is what we really need, not
workdir which is just a shortcut to set all directories!), we
retrieve this configuration from the system.config table through CQL.
I tested that test_tools.py now works not only through test/cql-pytest/run
but also if I run Scylla manually and then run "pytest test_tools.py"
without any extra parameters.

This patch gets rid annoying pytest configuration warnings when running
test/cql-pytest/run. These started to happen after commit
afab1a97c6, due to a pytest bug:
In that commit, we added new "--scylla-path" and "--workdir" parameters
to our pytest tests, and test/cql-pytest/run started passing them,
and test/cql-pytest/run sometest runs pytest as:
pytest --host something --workdir somedir --scylla-path somepath sometest
Pytest wants to find a configuration file (pytest.ini or tox.ini) in the
directory where the tests live, but its logic to find that directory is
buggy: It (_pytest/config/findpaths.py::determine_setup()) looks at
the command line for directory names, and looks for config files in
these directories or any of their parents. It ignores parameters
beginning with "-", but in our case the various arguments like
"--scylla-path" are each followed by another option, and this one is
not ignored! So instead of looking for the config file in sometest's
parent directories (and finding test/cql-pytest/pytest.ini), pytest
sees the directory given after "scylla-path", and finds the completely
irrelevant tox.ini there - and uses that, which (depending what you
have installed) can generate warnings.
The solution is to change the run script to use "--scylla-path=..."
as one parameter instead of "--scylla-path ..." as two parameters.
When it's just one parameter, the pytest determine_setup() logic skips
it entirely, and finds just the actual test directory.

We want to add tool tests. These tests will have to invoke scylla
executable (as tools are hosted by the latter) and they want access to
the scylla data directories. Propagate the scylla path and data
directory used from `run` into the test suite via pytest request
parameters.
Issue #8968 no longer exists when Raft-based schema updates are enabled
in Scylla (with --experimental-features=raft). Before we can close this
issue we need a way to re-run its test
test_keyspace.py::test_concurrent_create_and_drop_keyspace
with Raft and see it pass. But we also want the tests to continue to run
by default the older raft-less schema updates - so that this mode doesn't
regress during the potentially-long duration that it's still the default!
The solution in this patch is:
1. Introduce a "--raft" option to test/cql-pytest/run, which runs the tests
against a Scylla with the raft experimental feature, while the default is
still to run without it.
2. Introduce a text fixture "fails_without_raft" which marks a test which
is expected to fail with the old pre-raft code, but is expected to
pass in the new code.
3. Mark the test test_concurrent_create_and_drop_keyspace with this new
"fails_without_raft".
After this patch, running
test/cql-pytest/run --raft
test_keyspace.py::test_concurrent_create_and_drop_keyspace
Passes, which shows that issue 8968 was fixed (in Raft mode) - so we can say:

Running the same test without "--raft" still xfails (an expected failure).

Add a check_rest_api function that queries http://<node_addr>:10000/
that is served once scylla starts listening on the API port
and call it via run.wait_for_services.

This patch adds a "--ssl" option to test/cql-pytest's pytest, as well as
to the run script test/cql-pytest/run. When "test/cql-pytest/run --ssl"
is used, Scylla is started listening for encrypted connections on its
standard port (9042) - using a temporary unsigned certificate. Then, the
individual tests connect to this encrypted port using TLSv1.2 (Scylla
doesn't support earlier version of SSL) instead of TCP.
This "--ssl" feature allows writing test which stress various aspects of
the connection (e.g., oversized requests - see PR #8800), and then be
able to run those tests in both TCP and SSL modes.

Previously, test/cql-pytest/run was a Python script, while
test/cql-pytest/run-cassandra (to run the tests against Cassandra)
was still a shell script - modeled after test/alternator/run.
This patch makes rewrites run-cassandra in Python.
A lot of the same code is needed for both run and run-cassandra
tools. test/cql-pytest/run was already written in a way that this
common code was separate functions. For example, functions to start a
server in a temporary directory, to check when it finishes booting,
and to clean up at the end. This patch moves this common code to
a new file, "run.py" - and the tools "run" and "cassandra-run" are
very short programs which mostly use functions from run.py (run-cassandra
also has some unique code to run Cassandra, that no other test runner
will need).

This patch introduces a new way to do functional testing on Scylla,
similar to Alternator's test/alternator but for the CQL API:
The new tests, in test/cql-pytest, are written in Python (using the pytest
framework), and use the standard Python CQL driver to connect to any CQL
implementation - be it Scylla, Cassandra, Amazon Keyspaces, or whatever.
The use of standard CQL allows the test developer to easily run the same
test against both Scylla and Cassandra, to confirm that the behaviour that
our test expects from Scylla is really the "correct" (meaning Cassandra-
compatible) behavior.
A developer can run Scylla or Cassandra manually, and run "pytest"
to connect to them (see README.md for more instructions). But even more
usefully, this patch also provides two scripts: test/cql-pytest/run and
test/cql-pytest/run-cassandra. These scripts automate the task of running
Scylla or Cassandra (respectively) in a random IP address and temporary
directory, and running the tests against it.
The script test/cql-pytest/run is inspired by the existing test run
scripts of Alternator and Redis, but rewritten in Python in a way that
will make it easy to rewrite - in a future patch - all these other run
scripts to use the same common code to safely run a test server in a
temporary directory.
"run" is extremely quick, taking around two seconds to boot Scylla.
"run-cassandra" is slower, taking 13 seconds to boot Cassandra (maybe
this can be improved in the future, I still don't know how).
The tests themselves take milliseconds.
Although the 'run' script runs a single Scylla node, the developer
can also bring up any size of Scylla or Cassandra cluster manually
and run the tests (with "pytest") against this cluster.
This new test framework differs from the existing alternatives in the
following ways:
dtest: dtest focuses on testing correctness of *distributed* behavior,
involving clusters of multiple nodes and often cluster changes
during the test. In contrast, cql-pytest focuses on testing the
*functionality* of a large number of small CQL features - which
can usually be tested on a single-node cluster.
Additionally, dtest is out-of-tree, while cql-pytest is in-tree,
making it much easier to add or change tests together with code
patches.
Finally, dtest tests are notoriously slow. Hundreds of tests in
the new framework can finish faster than a single dtest.
Slow and out-of-tree tests are difficult to write, and I believe
this explains why no developer loves writing dtests and maintainers
do not insist on having them. I hope cql-pytest can change that.
test/cql: The defining difference between the existing test/cql suite
and the new test/cql-pytest is the new framework is programmatic,
Python code, not a text file with desired output. Tests written with
` code allow things like looping, repeating the same test with different
parameters. Also, when a test fails, it makes it easier to understand
why it failed beyond just the fact that the output changed.
Moreover, in some cases, the output changes benignly and cql-pytest
may check just the desired features of the output.
Beyond this, the current version of test/cql cannot run against
Cassandra. test/cql-pytest can.
The primary motivation for this new framework was
https://github.com/scylladb/scylla/issues/7443 - where we had an
esoteric feature (sort order of *partitions* when an index is addded),
which can be shown in Cqlsh to have what we think is incorrect behavior,
and yet: 1. We didn't catch this bug because we never wrote a test for it,
possibly because it too difficult to contribute tests, and 2. We *thought*
that we knew what Cassandra does in this case, but nobody actually tested
it. Yes, we can test it manually with cqlsh, but wouldn't everything be
better if we could just run the same test that we wrote for Scylla against
Cassandra?
So one of the tests we add in this patch confirms issue #7443 in Scylla,
and that our hunch was correct and Cassandra indeed does not have this
problem. I also add a few trivial tests for keyspace create and drop,
as additional simple examples.
