scylla-gdb: display ms-format sstable summary from partitions db footer
For ms-format (trie-based) sstables, the traditional summary structure is not populated. Instead, read equivalent metadata from the _partitions_db_footer field: first_key, last_key, partition_count, and trie_root_position. This is a follow-up to the crash fix for SCYLLADB-1180, replacing the informational-only message with actual useful output. Refs: SCYLLADB-1180 Closes scylladb/scylladb#29164 |

abseil: update to lts_2026_01_07
Switch to branch lts_2026_01_07, which is exactly equal to upstream now. There were no notable changes in the release notes, but the new versions are more friendly to newer compilers (specifically, in include hygiene). configure.py needs a few library updates; cmake works without change. scylla-gdb.py updated for new hash table layout (by Claude Opus 4.6). * abseil d7aaad83...255c84da (1179): > Abseil LTS branch, Jan 2026, Patch 1 (#2007) > Cherry-picks for LTS 20260107 (#1990) > Apply LTS transformations for 20260107 LTS branch (#1989) > Mark legacy Mutex methods and MutexLock pointer constructors as deprecated > `cleanup`: specify that it's safe to use the class in a signal handler. > Suppress bugprone-use-after-move in benign cases > StrFormat: format scientific notation without heap allocation > Introduce a legacy copy of GetDebugStackTraceHook API. > Report 1ns instead of 0ns for probe_benchmarks. Some tools incorrectly assume that benchmark was not run if 0ns reported. > Add absl::chunked_queue > `CRC32` version of `CombineContiguous` for length <= 32. > Add `absl::down_cast` > Fix FixedArray iterator constructor, which should require input_iterator, not forward_iterator > Add a latency benchmark for hashing a pair of integers. > Delete absl::strings_internal::STLStringReserveAmortized() > As IsAtLeastInputIterator helper > Use StringAppendAndOverwrite() in CEscapeAndAppendInternal() > Add support for absl::(u)int128 in FastIntToBuffer() > absl/strings: Prepare helper for printing objects to string representations. > Use SimpleAtob() for parsing bool flags > No-op changes to relative timeout support code. > Adjust visibility of heterogeneous_lookup_testing.h > Remove -DUNORDERED_SET_CXX17 since the macro no longer exists > [log] Prepare helper for streaming container contents to strings. > Restrict the visibility of some internal testing utilities > Add absl::linked_hash_set and absl::linked_hash_map > [meta] Add constexpr testing helper. > BUILD file reformatting. > `absl/meta`: Add C++17 port of C++20 `requires` expression for internal use > Remove the implementation of `absl::string_view`, which was only needed prior to C++17. `absl::string_view` is now an alias for `std::string_view`. It is recommended that clients simply use `std::string_view`. > No public description > absl:🎏 Stop echoing file content in flagfile parsing errors Modified ArgsList::ReadFromFlagfile to redact the content of unexpected lines from error messages. \ > Refactor the declaration of `raw_hash_set`/`btree` to omit default template parameters from the subclasses. > Import of CCTZ from GitHub. > Add ABSL_ATTRIBUTE_LIFETIME_BOUND to Flag help generator > Correct `Mix4x16Vectors` comment. > Special implementation for string hash with sizes greater than 64. > Reorder function parameters so that hash state is the first argument. > Search more aggressively for open slots in absl::internal_stacktrace::BorrowedFixupBuffer > Implement SpinLockHolder in terms of std::lock_guard. > No public description > Avoid discarding test matchers. > Import of CCTZ from GitHub. > Automated rollback of commit 9f40d6d6f3cfc1fb0325dd8637eb65f8299a4b00. > Enable clang-specific warnings on the clang-cl build instead of just trying to be MSVC > Enable clang-specific warnings on the clang-cl build instead of just trying to be MSVC > Make AnyInvocable remember more information > Add further diagnostics under clang for string_view(nullptr) > Import of CCTZ from GitHub. > Document the differing trimming behavior of absl::Span::subspan() and std::span::subspan() > Special implementation for string hash with sizes in range [33, 64]. > Add the deleted string_view(std::nullptr_t) constructor from C++23 > CI: Use a cached copy of GoogleTest in CMake builds if possible to minimize the possibility of errors downloading from GitHub > CI: Enable libc++ hardening in the ASAN build for even more checks https://libcxx.llvm.org/Hardening.html > Call the common case of AllocateBackingArray directly instead of through the function pointer. > Change AlignedType to have a void* array member so that swisstable backing arrays end up in the pointer-containing partition for heap partitioning. > base: Discourage use of ABSL_ATTRIBUTE_PACKED > Revert: Add an attribute to HashtablezInfo which performs a bitwise XOR on all hashes. The purposes of this attribute is to identify if identical hash tables are being created. If we see a large number of identical tables, it's likely the code can be improved by using a common table as opposed to keep rebuilding the same one. > Import of CCTZ from GitHub. > Record insert misses in hashtable profiling. > Add absl::StatusCodeToStringView. > Add a missing dependency on str_format that was being pulled in transitively > Pico-optimize `SkipWhitespace` to use `StripLeadingAsciiWhitespace`. > absl::string_view: Upgrade the debug assert on the single argument char* constructor to ABSL_HARDENING_ASSERT > Use non-stack storage for stack trace buffers > Fixed incorrect include for ABSL_NAMESPACE_BEGIN > Add ABSL_REFACTOR_INLINE to separate the inliner directive from the deprecated directive so that we can give users a custom deprecation message. > Reduce stack usage when unwinding without fixups > Reduce stack usage when unwinding from 170 to 128 on x64 > Rename RecordInsert -> RecordInsertMiss. > PR #1968: Use std::move_backward within InlinedVector's Storage::Insert > Use the new absl::StringResizeAndOverwrite() in CUnescape() > Explicitly instantiate common `raw_hash_set` backing array functions. > Rollback reduction of maximum load factor. Printing as pointers is more relevant to the result of the comparison. > Rollback StringAppendAndOverwrite() - the problem is that StringResizeAndOverwrite has MSAN testing of the entire string. This causes quadratic MSAN verification on small appends. > Add an internal-only helper StringAppendAndOverwrite() similar to StringResizeAndOverwrite() but optimized for repeated appends, using exponential growth to ensure amortized complexity of increasing a string size by a small amount is O(1). > PR #1961: Fix Clang warnings on powerpc > Use the new absl::StringResizeAndOverwrite() in string escaping utilities > Use the new absl::StringResizeAndOverwrite() in string escaping utilities > macOS CI: Move the Bazel vendor_dir to ${HOME} to workaround a Bazel issue where it does not work when it is in ${TMP} and also fix the quoting which was causing it to incorrectly receive the argument > Use __msan_check_mem_is_initialized for detailed MSan report > Optimize stack unwinding by reducing `AddressIsReadable` calls. > Add internal API to allow bypassing stack trace fixups when needed > absl::StrFormat: improve test coverage with scientific exponent test cases > Add throughput and latency benchmarks for `absl::ToDoubleXYZ` functions. > CordzInfo: Use absl::NoDestructor to remove a global destructor. scylla-gdb: fix sstable-summary crash on ms-format sstables
The 'scylla sstable-summary' GDB command crashes with 'ValueError: Argument "count" should be greater than zero' when inspecting ms-format (trie-based) sstables. This happens because ms-format sstables don't populate the traditional summary structure, leaving all fields zeroed out, which causes gdb.read_memory() to be called with a zero count. Fix by: - Adding zero-length guards to sstring.to_hex() and sstring.as_bytes() to return early when the data length is zero, consistent with the existing guard in managed_bytes.get(). - Adding the same guard to scylla_sstable_summary.to_hex(). - Detecting ms-format sstables (version == 5) early in scylla_sstable_summary.invoke() and printing an informative message instead of attempting to read the unpopulated summary. scylla-gdb.py: scylla read-stats: include all permit lists
The current code which collects permit stats is out-of-date (by a few years), as it only iterates through _permit_list. There are 4 additional lists that permits can be part of now (all intrusive). Include all of these in the stat collection. As a bonus, also print the semaphore pointer in the printout, so the user can hand-examine it, should they wish to. |

scylla-gdb.py: scylla fiber: add --direction command-line param
Can be "forward", "backward" or "both" (default). Allows traversing the fiber in just one direction. Useful when scylla fiber fails to traverse through a task and the user has to locate the next one in the chain manually. When resuming from this next item, the user might want to skip the already seen part of the fiber, to save time on the invokation. |

scylla-gdb.py: scylla fiber: add support for traversing through coroutines backward
Traversing through coroutines forward (finding task waiting on this coroutine) is already supported. This patch adds support for traversing through coroutines backwards (finding task waited on by coroutine). Coroutines need special handling: the future<> object is most likely allocated on the coroutine frame, so we have to search throgh that to find it. When doing so the first two pointers on the frame have to be skipped: these are pointers to .resume and .destroy respectively and will halt the search algorithm if seen. |

Fix for __iter__ method returns a non-iterator
To fix this issue, the std_list_iterator class defined within std_list.__iter__ should implement the full iterator protocol by defining an __iter__() method that returns self. This change ensures any instance of std_list_iterator can be used as an iterator in Python for loops and other iteration contexts, as required. The fix is to add a small method definition inside the std_list_iterator class, ideally after the __init__ or in a logical place with the other dunder methods. Only the code inside the std_list class's __iter__ function (lines around the definition of the inner class and its methods) needs to be edited. gdb: simplify and future-proof looking up coroutine frame type
llvm recently updated [1] their coroutine debugging instructions.
They now recommend looking up the variable __coro_frame in the coroutine
function rather than constructing the name of the coroutine frame type
from the ramp function plus __coro_frame_ty.
Since the latter method no longer works with Clang 21 (I did not check
why), and since the former method is blessed as being more compatible,
switch to the recommended method. Since it works with both Clang 20 and
Clang 21, it future proofs the script.

scylla-gdb.py: small-objects: don't cast free_object to void*
When walking the free-list of a pool or a span, the small-object code casts the dereferenced `free_object*` to `void*`. This is unnecessary, just use the `next` field of the `free_object` to look up the next free object. I think this monkey business with `void*` was done to speed up walking the free-list, but recently we've seen small-object --summarize fail in CI, and it could be related. sstables: introduce ms sstable format version
Introduce `ms` -- a new sstable format version which is a hybrid of Cassandra's `me` and `da`. It is based on `me`, but with the index components (Summary.db and Index.db) replaced with the index components of `da` (Partitions.db and Rows.db). As of this patch, the version is never chosen anywhere for writing sstables yet. It is only introduced. We will add it to unit tests in a later commit, and expose it to users in yet later commit. |

utils/logalloc: enforce LSA allocation size limits
In order to guarantee a decent upper limit on fragmentation, LSA only handles allocations smaller than 0.1 of a segment. Allocations larger than this limit are permitted, but they are not placed in LSA segments. Instead, they are forwarded to the standard allocator. We don't really have any use case for this "fallback". As far as I can tell, it only exists for "historical" reasons, from times where there were some data structures which weren't fully adapted to LSA yet. We don't the fallback to be used. Long-lived standard allocations are undesirable. They have higher internal fragmentation than LSA allocations, and they can cause external fragmentation in the standard allocator. So we want to eliminate them all. The only reason to keep the fallback is to soften the impact if some bug results in limit-exceeding LSA allocations happening in production. In principle, the fallback turns a crash (or something similarly drastic) into just a performance problem. However, it turns out that the fallback is buggy. Recently we had a bug which caused limit-exceeding LSA allocations to happen. And then it turned out that LSA reclaim doesn't deal fully correctly with evictable non-LSA allocations, and the dirty_memory_manager accounting for non-LSA allocations is completely wrong. This resulted in subtle, serious, and hard to understand stability problems in production. Arguably the biggest problem is that the "fallback" allocations weren't reported in any way. They were happening in some tests, but they were silently permitted, so nobody noticed that they should be eliminated. If we just had a rate-limited error log that reports fallback allocations, they would have never got into a release. So maybe we could fix the fallback, add more tests for it, add a warning for when it's used, and keep it. But this PR instead opts for removing the fallback mechanism altogether and failing fast. After the patch, if a non-conforming allocation happens, it will trigger an `on_internal_error`. With this, we risk a greater impact if some non-conforming allocations happen in production, but we make the system simpler. It's hard to say if it's a good tradeoff. |

scylla-gdb: small-objects: fix for very small objects
Because of rounding and alignment, there are multiple pools for small sizes (e.g. 4 for size 32). Because the pool selection algorithm ignores alignment, different pools can be chosen for different object sizes. For example, an object size of 29 will choose the first pool of size 32, while an object size of 32 will choose the fourth pool of size 32. The small-objects command doesn't know about this and always considers just the first pool for a given size. This causes it to miss out on sister pools. While it's possible to adjust pool selection to always choose one of the pools, it may eat a precious cycle. So instead let's compensate in the small-objects command. Instead of finding one pool for a given size, find all of them, and iterate over all those pools. Fixes #23603 Closes scylladb/scylladb#23604 |

scylla-gdb.py: seastar_lw_shared_ptr: add __nonzero__ and __bool__
There is currently no easy way to null-check seastar_lw_shared_ptr. Comparing get() against 0 doesn't work, if _p is null, get() will return an illegal pointer. So add methods to allow for easy null-checks by comparing _p with 0 instead. |

treewide: move gossiper to index nodes by host id
This patch changes gossiper to index nodes by host ids instead of ips. The main data structure that changes is _endpoint_state_map, but this results in a lot of changes since everything that uses the map directly or indirectly has to be changed. The big victim of this outside of the gossiper itself is topology over gossiper code. It works on IPs and assumes the gossiper does the same and both need to be changed together. Changes to other subsystems are much smaller since they already mostly work on host ids anyway. |

replica/database: add reader concurrency semaphore groups
Replace the reader concurrency semaphores for user reads and view updates with the newly introduced reader concurrency semaphore group, which assigns a semaphore for each service level. Each group is statically assigned to some pool of memory on startup and dynamically distribute this memory between the semaphores, relative to the number of shares of the corresponding scheduling group. The intent of having a separate reader concurrency semaphore for each scheduling group is to prevent priority inversion issues due to reads with different priorities waiting on the same semaphore, as well as make memory allocation more fair between service levels due to the adjusted number of shares. |

compaction/compaction_manager: make _tasks an intrusive list
_tasks is currently std::list<shared_ptr<compaction_task_executor>>, but it has no role in keeping the instances alive, this is done by the fibers which create the task (and pin a shared ptr instance). This lends itself to an intrusive list, avoiding that extra allocation upon push_back(). Using an intrusive list also makes it simpler and much cheaper (O(1) vs. O(N)) to remove tasks from the _tasks list. This will be made use of in the next patch. Code using _task has to be updated because the value_type changes from shared_ptr<compaction_task_executor> to compaction_task_executor&. |

gdb: avoid @classmethod/@property combinations
The @classmethod/@property combination was deprecated in Python 3.11 and removed[1] in Python 3.13. It's used in scylla-gdb.py, breaking it with Python 3.13. To fix, just make all users (size_t and _vptr_type) top-level functions. The definitions are all identical and don't need to be in class scope. mv: add a dedicated read concurrency semaphore for view update read before writes
When writing to some tables with materialized views, we need to read from the base table first to perform a delete of the old view row. When doing so, the memory used for the read is tracked by the user read concurrency semaphore. When we have a large number of such reads, we may use up all of the semaphore units, causing the following reads to be queued. When we have some user reads coming at the same time, these reads can have very high latency due to the write workload on the base table. We want to avoid this, so that the write workload doesn't have a high impact on the latency of the read workload. This is fixed in this patch by adding a separate read concurrency semaphore just for view update read-before-writes. With the new semaphore, even if there are many view update read-before-writes, they will be queued on a different semaphore than the user reads, and they won't impact their latency. The second issue fixed by this patch is the concurrency of the view updates that is currently unlimited. Because of that view updates may take up so much memory that they we may run out of memory. This is fixed by using the read admission on the view update concurrency semaphore. This limits the number of concurrent view update reads to max_count_concurrent_view_update_reads, all other incoming view update reads are queued using just a small chunk of memory. Without this, the reads would also get queued after exceeding view_update_reader_concurrency_semaphore_serialize_limit_multiplier, but they would take much more memory while staying in the queue. The new semaphore has half the capacity of the regular user read concurrency semahpore and is currently used only for user writes - is't used independently of the scheduling group on which we base the read semaphore selection, but we use a different code path for streaming (not database::do_apply) and we shouldn't have view updates in system writes or during compaction. scylla-gdb.py: lazy-evaluate the constants
instead of evaluating the constants in-class, accessing them via
a cached class property.
it would be handy if we could source `scylla-gdb.py` in `.gdbinit`,
but this script accesses some symbols which are not available with
a file being debugged. so when gdb fails to load init script:
```
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/home/kefu/dev/scylladb/scylla-gdb.py", line 167, in <module>
class intrusive_slist:
File "/home/kefu/dev/scylladb/scylla-gdb.py", line 168, in intrusive_slist
size_t = gdb.lookup_type('size_t')
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
gdb.error: No type named size_t.
```
so we have to `file path/to/scylla` and *then*
`source scylla-gdb.py` every time when we debug scylla or a seastar
application, instead of loading `scylla-gdb.py` in `.gdbinit`.
the reason is that the script access the debug symbols like
`gdb.lookup_type('size_t')` in-class. so when the python interpreter
reads the script, it evaluates this statement, but at that moment,
the debug symbols are not loaded, so `source scylla-gdb.py` fails
in `.gdbinit`.
in this change, we transform all these class variables to cached
property, so that they
* are evaluated on-demand
* are evaluated only once at most
this addresses the pain at the expense of verbosity.
