The test/cqlpy/run-cassandra script makes it quite easy to run test/cqlpy
tests against Cassandra, which is important for checking compatibility.
Unfortunately, because modern Linux distributions like Fedora do not have
either Cassandra or the old version of Java that it needs, the user needs
to download those manually. This is fairly easy, and explained in detail
in test/cqlpy/README.md, but nevertheless is a non-trivial manual step.
So this patch adds an even simpler alternative, the "--docker" option
which tells the script to run the official Cassandra docker image,
complete with the version of Java that it prefers - the user does not
need to download or install Cassandra or Java. The image is efficiently
cached by Docker, so running run-cassandra again doesn't need to
download it again; Moreover, trying several different versions of
Cassandra only needs to download and store the shared parts (base image
and Java) once.
test/cqlpy/run-cassandra --docker test_file.py::test_function
Runs by default the latest Cassandra 5 release. You can also use
"--docker=4" to get the latest Cassandra 4 release, "--docker=3.11"
to get the latest Cassandra 3.11 patch release, or "--docker=3.11.1"
to get a specific patch release.
In addition to the "--docker" option, this patch also introduces a
second option, "--java-docker", which takes *only* Java from docker,
but runs your locally installed Cassandra (to which you should point
with the CASSANDRA environment variable, as before). This option can
be useful if your host does not have a suitable version of Java, but
you want to run a locally-installed or locally-modified version of
Cassandra. The "--java-docker" option defaults to getting Java 11,
to use other versions you can use for example "--java-docker=17".

The script test/cqpy/run-cassandra aims to make it easy to run
any version of Cassandra using whatever version of Java the user
has installed. Sadly, the fact that Java keeps changing and the
Cassandra developers are very slow to adapt to new Javas makes
doing this non-trivial.
This patch makes it possible for run-cassandra to run Cassandra 5
on the Java 21 that is now the default on Fedora 42. Fedora 42
no longer carries antique version of Java (like Java 8 or 11), not
even as an optional package.
Sadly, even with this patch it is not possible to run older
versions of Cassandra (4 and 3) with Java 21, because the new
Java is missing features such as Netty that the older Cassandra
require. But at least it restores the ability to run our cqlpy
tests against Cassandra 5.
Also, this patch adds to test/cqlpy/README.md simple instructions on
how to install Java 11 (in addition to the system's default Java 21)
on Fedora 42. Doing this is very easy and very recommended because
it restores the ability to run Cassandra 3 and 4, not just Cassandra 5.

test/cqlpy/README.md explains how to run the cqlpy tests against
Cassandra, and mentions that if you don't have "nodetool" in your path
you need to set the NODETOOL variable. However, when giving a simple
example how to use the run-cassandra script, we forgot to remind the
user to set NODETOOL in addition to CASSANDRA, causing confusion for
users who didn't know why tests were failing.
So this patch fixes the section in test/cqlpy/README.md with the
run-cassandra example to also set the NODETOOL environment variable,
not just CASSANDRA.

Python and Python developers don't like directory names to include a
minus sign, like "cql-pytest". In this patch we rename test/cql-pytest
to test/cqlpy, and also change a few references in other code (e.g., code
that used test/cql-pytest/run.py) and also references to this test suite
in documentation and comments.
Arguably, the word "test" was always redundant in test/cql-pytest, and
I want to leave the "py" in test/cqlpy to emphasize that it's Python-based
tests, contrasting with test/cql which are CQL-request-only approval
tests.
