605a2de398 config: change default prometheus_address handling, again
In the very recent commit 3c0e703 fixing issue #8757, we changed the
default prometheus_address setting in scylla.yaml to "localhost", to
match the default listen_address in the same file. We explained in that
commit how this helped developers who use an unchanged scylla.yaml, and
how it didn't hurt pre-existing users who already had their own scylla.yaml.

However, it was quickly noted by Tzach and Amnon that there is one use case
that was hurt by that fix:

Our existing documentation, such as the installation guide
https://www.scylladb.com/download/?platform=centos ask the user to take
our initial scylla.yaml, and modify listen_address, rpc_address, seeds,
and cluster_name - and that's it. That document - and others - don't
tell the user to also override prometheus_address, so users will likely
forget to do so - and monitoring will not work for them.

So this patch includes a different solution to #8757.
What it does is:
1. The setting of prometheus_address in scylla.yaml is commented out.
2. In config.cc, prometheus_address defaults to empty.
3. In main.cc, if prometheus_address is empty (i.e., was not explicitly
set by the user), the value of listen_address is used instead.

In other words, the idea is that prometheus_address, if not explicitly set
by the user, should default to listen_address - which is the address used
to listen to the internal Scylla inter-node protocol.

Because the documentation already tells the user to set listen_address
and to not leave it set to localhost, setting it will also open up
prometheus, thereby solving #9701. Meanwhile, developers who leave the
default listen_address=localhost will also get prometheus_address=localhost,
so the original #8757 is solved as well. Finally, for users who had an old
scylla.yaml where prometheus_address was explicitly set to something,
this setting will continue to be used. This was also a requirement of
issue #8757.

Fixes #9701.

3c0e7037be conf/scylla.yaml: change default Prometheus listen address
Developers often run Scylla with the default conf/scylla.yaml provided
with the source distribution. The existing default listens for all ports
but one (19042, 10000, 9042, 7000) on the *localhost* IP address (127.0.0.1).
But just one port - 9180 (Prometheus metrics) - is listened on 0.0.0.0.
This patch changes the default to be 127.0.0.1 for port 9180 as well.

Note that this just changes the default scylla.yaml - users can still
choose whatever listening address they want by changing scylla.yaml
and/or passing command line parameters.

The benefits of this patch are:
1. More consistent.
2. Better security for developers (don't open ports on external
   addresses while testing).
3. Allow test/cql-pytest/run to run in parallel with a default run of
Scylla (currently, it fails to run Scylla on a random IP address,
because the default run of Scylla already took port 9180 on all IP
   addresses.

The third benefit is what led me to write this patch. Fixes #8757.

ee8dc6847c scylla.yaml: refresh list of experimental features
Our scylla.yaml contains a comment listing the available experimental
features, supposedly helping a user who might want to enable them.
I think the usefuless of this comment is dubious, but as long as we
have one, let's at least make it accurate:

* Two of the listed "experimental" features, cdc and lwt, have actually
graduated from being experimental long ago. Although technically a user
may still use the words "cdc" and "lwt" in the "experimental-features"
list, doing so is pointless, and worse: This comment suggests that these
two features are still experimental - while they are not!

* One experimental feature - alternator-ttl - is missing from this list.

703aed3277 table: add option to automatically bypass cache for reversed queries
Currently the new reversing sstable algorithms do not support fast
forwarding and the cache does not yet handle reversed results. This
forced us to disable the cache for reversed queries if we want to
guarantee bounded memory. We introduce an option that does this
automatically (without specifying `bypass cache` in the query) and turn
it on by default.

If the user decides that they prefer to keep the cache at the
cost of fetching entire partitions into memory (which may be viable
if their partitions are small) during reversed queries, the option can
be turned off. It is live-updateable.

e0f40ed16a cli: Add the --workdir|-W option
When starting scylla daemon as non-root the initialization fails
because standard /var/lib/scylla is not accessible by regular users.
Making the default dir accessible for user is not very convenient
either, as it will cause conflicts if two or more instances of scylla
are in use.

This problem can be resolved by specifying --commitlog-directory,
--data-file-directories, etc on start, but it's too much typing. I
propose to revive Nadav's --home option that allows to move all the
directories under the same prefix in one go.

Unlike Nadav's approach the --workdir option doesn't do any tricky
manipulations with existing directories. Insead, as Pekka suggested,
the individual directories are placed under the workir if and only
if the respective option is NOT provided. Otherwise the directory
configuration is taken as is regardless of whether its absolute or
relative path.

The values substutution is done early on start. Avi suggested that
this is unsafe wrt HUP config re-read and proper paths must be
resolved on the fly, but this patch doesn't address that yet, here's
why.

First of all, the respective options are MustRestart now and the
substitution is done before HUP handler is installed.

Next, commitlog and data_file values are copied on start, so marking
the options as LiveUpdate won't make any effect.

Finally, the existing named_value::operator() returns a reference,
so returning a calculated (and thus temporary) value is not possible
(from my current understanding, correct me if I'm wrong). Thus if we
want the *_directory() to return calculated value all callers of them
must be patched to call something different (e.g. *_directory.get() ?)
which will lead to more confusion and errors.

Changes v3:
 - the option is --workdir back again
 - the existing *directory are only affected if unset
 - default config doesn't have any of these set
 - added the short -W alias

Changes v2:
 - the option is --home now
 - all other paths are changed to be relative

da090a5458 materialized views: move hints to top-level directory
While we keep ordinary hints in a directory parallel to the data directory,
we decided to keep the materialized view hints in a subdirectory of the data
directory, named "view_pending_updates". But during boot, we expect all
subdirectories of data/ to be keyspace names, and when we notice this one,
we print a warning:

WARN: database - Skipping undefined keyspace: view_pending_updates

This spurious warning annoyed users. But moreover, we could have bigger
problems if the user actually tries to create a keyspace with that name.

So in this patch, we move the view hints to a separate top-level directory,
which defaults to /var/lib/scylla/view_hints, but as usual can be configured.

900ffad979 config: re-add murmur3_ignore_msb_bits to scylla.yaml
Commit d6b0c4dda4 changed the built-in default
murmur3_ignore_msb_bits to 12 (from 0) and removed the scylla.yaml default.

Removal of the scylla.yaml default was a mistake for two reasons:
 - if someone downgrades a cluster, keeping scylla.yaml derived from the
master branch, they will experience resharding since the built-in default,
which has changed, will take effect. While that scenario is not supported,
it already happened and caused much consternation.
 - if, in the future, we wish to change the default, we will cause resharding
again. Embedding the default in scylla.yaml allows us to change the default
for new clusters while allowing upgraded clusters to retain older values.

Therefore, this patch restores murmur3_ignore_msb_bits in scylla.yaml. Future
changes to the configuration item should change both scylla.yaml and the
built-in default.

d6b0c4dda4 config: default murmur3_ignore_msb_bits to 12 even if not specified in scylla.yaml
When murmur3_ignore_msb_bits was introduced in 1.7, we set its default zero
(to avoid resharding on upgrade) and set it to 12 in the scylla.yaml template
(to make sure we get the right value for new clusters).

Now, however, things have changed:
 - clusters installed before 1.7 are a small minority
 - they should have resharded long ago
 - resharding is much better these days
 - we have more migrations from Cassandra compared to old clusters

To allow clusters that migrated using their cassandra.yaml, and to clean up
the default scylla.yaml, make the default 12.

Users upgrading from pre-1.7 clusters will need to update their scylla.yaml,
or to reshard (which is a good idea anyway).

08502f2d48 Add single_key_parallel_scan_threshold option
This option regulates when exactly the single-key optimization is
considered ineffective and turned off.
The threshold is the proportion of the extra data source candidates that
can be read before the optimization is considered ineffective and
disabled. The proportion is calculated as follows:
    (read_data_sources - 1) / (total_data_sources - 1)

We substract 1 from the read_data_sources and total_data_sources to
effectively measure the rate of *extra* data sources we read. This
makes sure that the proportion is meaningful even if e.g. we have only
have a total of 2 data-sources and we read only 1 (best case).

Whenever this number goes above the threshold the optimization is
disabled. The threshold is number between 0 and 1, 0 forces the
optimization off and 1 forces it on. Increase the treshold to favor
throughput over latency for single-row reads, decrease the treshold to
improve latency at the expense of throughput.

If the threshold is > 0 (it's not force disabled) and the optimization
is disabled due to a read crossing the threshold, we will issue
"probing" reads (every 100th read) to determine if the optimization is
worth re-enabling. Probing reads are allowed to run through the
optimization path and if they go below the threshold the optimization is
re-enabled.

45e23d8090 db::config: fix the permissions cache related parameters description
Make the descriptions of permissions_validity_in_ms, permissions_update_interval_in_ms
and permissions_cache_max_entries more readable and more related to what they really
do.

Mention the none-zero value requirement for the permissions_update_interval_in_ms and
the permissions_cache_max_entries when the permissions cache is enabled.

Adjust the parameters description in the scylla.yaml too.

Set murmur3_partitioner_ignore_msb_bits to 12 (enabling the new sharding

This avoids changing the configuration for existing clusters, as their

895e838ac0 get rid of max_memtable_size
After recent changes to the memtable code, there is no reason for us to
uphold a maximum memtable size. Now that we only flush one memtable at a
time anyway, and also have soft limit notifications from the
region_group_reclaimer, we can just set the soft limit to the target
size and let all of that be handled by the dirty_memory_manager.

It does have the added property that we'll be flushing when we globally
reach the soft limit threshold. In conditions in which we have multiple
CF writes fighting for memory, that guarantees that we will start
flushing much earlier than the hard limit.

The threshold is set to 1/4 of dirty memory. While in theory we would
prefer the memtables to go as big as 1/2 of dirty memory, in my
experiments I have found 1/4 to be a better fit, at least for the
moment.

The reason for such behavior is that in situations where we have slow
disks, setting the soft limit to 1/2 of dirty will put us in a situation
in which we may not have finished writing down the memtable when we hit
the limit, and then throttle. When set the threshold to 1/4 of dirty, we
don't throttle at all.

This behavior could potentially be fixed by not doing the full
memtable-based throttling after we do the commitlog throttling, but that
is not something realistic for the moment.
