CopyObject ignored the destination's `If-Match` and `If-None-Match` headers and always overwrote or created the destination, so a stale `If-Match`, `If-None-Match: *` on an existing key, `If-Match` on a missing key and `If-Match` over a delete marker all returned 200. The controller now parses both headers and passes them to the backend through new `IfMatch` and `IfNoneMatch` fields on `s3response.CopyObjectInput`, which match the SDK's `s3.CopyObjectInput`.
As in S3, the destination is evaluated before the copy source is looked up, so a failing destination precondition wins over a missing source, a failing `x-amz-copy-source-*` precondition and an invalid copy onto itself. Posix checks the destination with `checkPutPreconditions` right after the destination bucket check, then forwards the headers to `PutObject`, which repeats the check under the object publish lock. The unversioned in-place self copy does not go through `PutObject`, so it now takes `lockObjectPublish` and repeats the check itself.
`checkPutPreconditions` now treats a current delete marker as a missing key: `If-Match` returns `NoSuchKey` and `If-None-Match: *` creates a new version. Before, the hidden version's etag was evaluated, which also affected `PutObject` and `CompleteMultipartUpload`.
`EvaluateObjectPutPreconditions` now rejects unsupported headers in S3's order: both headers present, then `If-None-Match` other than `*`, then `If-Match: *`, each with `NotImplemented`. `If-Match: *` was previously compared as a literal etag. The new `NmpAdditionalMessageIfMatch` message is added, and a stray backslash is removed from the `If-None-Match` message.
Azure evaluates the destination preconditions before copying, and s3proxy forwards the headers. `s3:if-match` and `s3:if-none-match` are now populated in the policy condition context for CopyObject, as S3 does, while UploadPartCopy stays excluded.
The bucket default retention was never stored on objects: protection was computed at delete time from the live bucket rule (`CreatedAt` + period), so changing or removing the rule unlocked existing objects, `COMPLIANCE` ones included, and a rule set N days ago stopped protecting even new objects. The posix and azure backends now store the rule's retention, `{Mode, now + Days/Years}` truncated to milliseconds, as the object's own retention whenever a write sets no Object Lock parameters: `PutObject` (which also covers POST, RDMA and `CopyObject`), `CreateMultipartUpload` (the rule and start time are fixed at creation, as S3 does) and the unversioned in-place self-copy, which applied no lock settings before. As on S3, any explicit `x-amz-object-lock-legal-hold`, `ON` or `OFF`, means the default retention is not applied. The bucket-rule fallback in `checkObject` and `BucketLockConfig.CreatedAt` are removed, so objects written before this change lose bucket-derived protection, and an expired retention no longer skips the legal hold check.
`PutObjectLockConfiguration` now rejects a `DefaultRetention` with a mode but no `Days`/`Years` with `InvalidRequest` "DefaultRetention must specify a fixed retention (Days or Years) or a DefaultEventHold.", and a `<Rule>` without `DefaultRetention` with `MalformedXML`. Azure `CopyObject` with the `COPY` metadata directive no longer copies the source's `Objectretention`/`Objectlegalhold` metadata to the destination.
Browser POST uploads now validate and apply the `x-amz-object-lock-mode`, `x-amz-object-lock-retain-until-date` and `x-amz-object-lock-legal-hold` form fields. They require `s3:PutObjectRetention`/`s3:PutObjectLegalHold`, for anonymous uploads too, and return `ErrMissingObjectLockConfigurationNoSpaces` on buckets without Object Lock after authorization. A denied POST names the actions in S3's order: retention, legal hold, tagging, then `s3:PutObject`.
`NoSuchObjectLockConfiguration` now returns 404 without a trailing period. `x-amz-object-lock-retain-until-date` on HEAD and GET has millisecond precision and omits zero milliseconds, `GetObjectRetention` returns `<Retention>` with a `.000Z` date, and posix and azure `GetObject` now return the Object Lock headers.
Add request plumbing for server-side encryption with customer-provided
keys (SSE-C) and stop silently ignoring it on backends that cannot
honor it.
Previously SSE-C headers were dropped before reaching the backend, so
posix stored the data unencrypted and returned success, and later
reads without the key succeeded. Clients believed their data was
encrypted when it was not. Partial or malformed SSE-C header sets were
also accepted instead of failing with 400 as S3 does. Rejecting SSE-C
explicitly is the safe behavior until posix implements it, and azure
cannot faithfully map SSE-C onto customer-provided keys.
This addresses part of #2193: invalid/partial SSE-C headers now fail
with 400. Requiring SSE-C headers on reads of SSE-C objects depends on
posix SSE-C support and remains open.
The changes also reject unsupported SSE-S3, SSE-KMS, and DSSE-KMS
requests instead of silently accepting them. And enforcea TLS for
SSE-C by default, with --disable-sse-c-tls-enforcement as the opt-out
in case the deployment handles TLS in front of the gateway.
Creating a delete marker in posix keeps the file of the hidden version at the object path and only marks it with the delete marker attribute, so the delete marker kept the modification time of the version it hides. `ListObjectVersions` listed that time for current and noncurrent delete markers, and `HeadObject` and `GetObject` sent it as the `Last-Modified` header of the `MethodNotAllowed` response for a delete marker `versionId`. AWS reports the time the delete marker is created, including for the null delete marker created while versioning is suspended. `DeleteObject` now sets the modification time of the delete marker to the time it's created. Setting the time needs the entry to be owned by the gateway, so it is left as is otherwise, like it is for directory objects.
`ListObjectVersions` also listed the delete markers with the SDK `types.DeleteMarkerEntry`, which has no XML marshaling of its own, so `LastModified` was sent in the local time zone of the gateway and with a sub-second part, while the versions are sent in UTC to the second. The delete markers are now listed with the new `s3response.DeleteMarkerEntry`, which formats `LastModified` the same way as `s3response.ObjectVersion`, and the s3proxy backend converts the upstream delete markers to it.
With <Quiet>true</Quiet> in the Delete request, S3 lists only the
objects it could not delete, so a request where every deletion succeeds
returns an empty DeleteResult. The request body was parsed without the
Quiet element and every deleted object was listed.
Parse Quiet with the objects and drop the Deleted entries from the
merged result when it is set; errors are still reported.
Fixes#2124
* fix: return InvalidArgument for an empty website configuration
`PutBucketWebsite` parsed an empty `<WebsiteConfiguration/>` into a zero-value config, and `WebsiteConfiguration.Validate` reported the nil `IndexDocument` as `MalformedXML`. S3 reports the missing index document as an `InvalidArgument` request error naming the argument instead:
InvalidArgument: A value for IndexDocument Suffix must be provided if RedirectAllRequestsTo is empty
That branch now returns the error with `ArgumentName=IndexDocument` and `ArgumentValue=null`, matching the response in the report. Genuinely malformed XML, and a `RedirectAllRequestsTo` that conflicts with the other fields, still return `MalformedXML`.
Fixes#2260
* test: cover an empty website configuration in the PutBucketWebsite integration suite
Add a `PutBucketWebsite_empty_configuration` case that sends the empty `<WebsiteConfiguration/>` payload from the report and asserts the `InvalidArgument` response, including `ArgumentName=IndexDocument` and `ArgumentValue=null`.
The SDK collapses the error into a generic API error that drops the argument fields, so the request is signed by hand and the raw response checked with `checkHTTPResponseApiErr`, the same helper the other argument-field assertions use. The case fails against the previous behaviour with `expected error code to be InvalidArgument, instead got MalformedXML`.

Closes#2304
Adds `versitygw utils convert-posix-dataset` (alias `cpd`), which makes a posix dataset not created by the gateway fully compatible with the posix backend. Every top level directory is treated as a bucket and gets a private ACL owned by `--access-key-id` (defaults to the root `--access`) and `BucketOwnerEnforced` object ownership; root level files are ignored. Metadata is stored in xattrs, or in `--sidecar-dir` when set.
`--calculate-etag` and `--checksum-algorithm` optionally compute the MD5 ETag and the `FULL_OBJECT` checksum of every object in a single streamed read. Objects are converted concurrently, tunable with `--concurrency` and `--read-buffer-size`. Existing bucket and object metadata is never overwritten.
A new glaicer mode for the archiving backend needs the storage
class supplied to the backend for put object, create multipart
upload, and browser post object input.
Integrate x-amz-website-redirect-location across object metadata flows so uploads, copies, multipart creation, HEAD, and GET preserve and return redirect locations, and website hosting applies object-level redirects from the stored value.
Enhances the static website hosting implementation with more complete S3-compatible behavior across request handling, backend storage, validation, CORS, and errors.
Adds dedicated website endpoint handling for GET, HEAD, and OPTIONS requests, including index document resolution, error document serving, redirect-all support, pre-fetch and post-error routing rules, query string preservation in redirects, public access checks before object reads, and method-not-allowed responses.
Improves error handling for website responses by returning S3-compatible HTML error bodies with request IDs, host IDs, x-amz-error-code, x-amz-error-message, and specialized error fields. This also fixes website-related validation errors to return more accurate S3-style error codes and messages, including invalid redirect protocols, invalid HTTP redirect/error codes, conflicting routing rule replacements, routing rule limits, and oversized website configuration requests.
Adds website CORS support for GET, HEAD, and OPTIONS preflight requests, including bucket CORS lookup through website host bucket resolution, allowed origin/method/header validation, exposed header handling, ETag exposure, Vary headers, max-age handling, and CORS access-denied responses.
Adds debug logging around website configuration parsing, validation failures, CORS checks, backend lookup failures, and internal website error paths to make failures easier to diagnose.
Adds compressed website configuration storage so larger configs fit backend metadata limits, including gzip storage for POSIX extended attributes and base64-encoded compressed metadata for Azure. Also adds Azure PutBucketWebsite, GetBucketWebsite, and DeleteBucketWebsite support.
Adds and expands test coverage for website config validation, S3-compatible HTML error bodies, website routing behavior, public access enforcement, HEAD behavior, CORS handling, PutBucketWebsite limits, and end-to-end website hosting through a Docker-based dnsmasq test setup and CI workflow.
Replace PutBucketWebsite, GetBucketWebsite, DeleteBucketWebsite
NotImplemented test stubs with comprehensive integration tests covering:
- non-existing bucket errors
- validation (empty suffix, suffix with slash, invalid protocol, mutual
exclusion of RedirectAllRequestsTo and IndexDocument)
- successful put/get round-trips for both index+error and redirect-all configs
- delete idempotency and verification

Add error document serving, routing rules, and integration tests
Implement Features 1 and 2 of S3 static website hosting:
- WebsiteErrorDocument controller wrapper intercepts 4xx errors on
website-enabled buckets and serves the configured error document or
evaluates post-request routing rules (error code match redirects)
- ResolveWebsiteIndex middleware now caches parsed WebsiteConfiguration
in context, handles RedirectAllRequestsTo, evaluates pre-request
routing rules (key prefix match redirects), and rewrites directory
keys for index document
- MatchPreRequestRule and MatchPostRequestRule methods on
WebsiteConfiguration for routing rule evaluation
- 14 unit tests for routing rule matching
- 7 integration tests covering error document, routing rules,
redirect-all, and index document behavior

Add S3 bucket website configuration types with XML serialization support
in s3response/website.go. Includes IndexDocument, ErrorDocument,
RedirectAllRequestsTo, and RoutingRules with full validation matching
AWS S3 behavior.
Add corresponding S3 error codes: ErrNoSuchWebsiteConfiguration,
ErrInvalidWebsiteConfiguration, ErrInvalidWebsiteSuffix, and
ErrInvalidWebsiteRedirectCode.
Unit tests cover validation logic, XML round-trip, and parsing.

Add website backend interface and implementations for posix and s3proxy
Add PutBucketWebsite, GetBucketWebsite, and DeleteBucketWebsite methods
to the Backend interface with BackendUnsupported stubs that return
ErrNotImplemented.
Posix backend stores website config as a metadata attribute (key:
'website') following the same pattern as CORS. ScoutFS inherits via
embedding.
S3Proxy backend stores website config in the metadata bucket with
prefix 'vgw-meta-website-', consistent with existing ACL/policy/CORS
metadata storage. Returns ErrNoSuchWebsiteConfiguration when not found.

Add website API controllers and wire into router
Add PutBucketWebsite, GetBucketWebsite, and DeleteBucketWebsite
controller methods following the same pattern as CORS. Controllers
parse and validate WebsiteConfiguration XML, check IAM authorization,
and delegate to the backend.
Replace the three HandleErrorRoute(ErrNotImplemented) stubs in the
router with the new controller methods. Regenerate the backend mock
to include the new interface methods.

Add website index document middleware and wire into router
Add ResolveWebsiteIndex middleware that rewrites directory-like object keys
(empty or ending with /) to include the IndexDocument suffix when website
hosting is enabled. Also handles RedirectAllRequestsTo by returning 301.
Wire the middleware into both GetObject and HeadObject handler chains in
the router, positioned after BucketObjectNameValidator and before auth.

Refactor global S3 error handling around structured error types and centralized XML response generation.
All S3 errors now share the common APIError base for the fields every error has: Code, HTTP status code, and Message. Non-traditional errors that need AWS-compatible XML fields now have dedicated typed errors in the s3err package. Each typed error implements the shared S3Error behavior so controllers and middleware can handle errors consistently while still emitting error-specific XML fields.
Add a dedicated InvalidArgumentError type because InvalidArgument is used widely across request validation, auth, copy source handling, object lock validation, multipart validation, and header parsing. The new InvalidArgument path uses explicit InvalidArgErrorCode constants with predefined descriptions and ArgumentName values, keeping call sites readable while preserving the correct InvalidArgument XML shape and optional ArgumentValue.
New structured errors added in s3err:
- `AccessForbiddenError`: Method, ResourceType
- `BadDigestError`: CalculatedDigest, ExpectedDigest
- `BucketError`: BucketName
- `ContentSHA256MismatchError`: ClientComputedContentSHA256, S3ComputedContentSHA256
- `EntityTooLargeError`: ProposedSize, MaxSizeAllowed
- `EntityTooSmallError`: ProposedSize, MinSizeAllowed
- `ExpiredPresignedURLError`: ServerTime, XAmzExpires, Expires
- `InvalidAccessKeyIdError`: AWSAccessKeyId
- `InvalidArgumentError`: Description, ArgumentName, ArgumentValue
- `InvalidChunkSizeError`: Chunk, BadChunkSize
- `InvalidDigestError`: ContentMD5
- `InvalidLocationConstraintError`: LocationConstraint
- `InvalidPartError`: UploadId, PartNumber, ETag
- `InvalidRangeError`: RangeRequested, ActualObjectSize
- `InvalidTagError`: TagKey, TagValue
- `KeyTooLongError`: Size, MaxSizeAllowed
- `MetadataTooLargeError`: Size, MaxSizeAllowed
- `MethodNotAllowedError`: Method, ResourceType, AllowedMethods
- `NoSuchUploadError`: UploadId
- `NoSuchVersionError`: Key, VersionId
- `NotImplementedError`: Header, AdditionalMessage
- `PreconditionFailedError`: Condition
- `RequestTimeTooSkewedError`: RequestTime, ServerTime, MaxAllowedSkewMilliseconds
- `SignatureDoesNotMatchError`: AWSAccessKeyId, StringToSign, SignatureProvided, StringToSignBytes, CanonicalRequest, CanonicalRequestBytes
Fix CompleteMultipartUpload validation in the Azure backend so missing or empty `ETag` values return the appropriate S3 error instead of allowing a gateway panic.
Fix presigned authentication expiration validation to compare server time in `UTC`, matching the `UTC` timestamp used by presigned URL signing.
Add request ID and host ID support across S3 requests. Each request now receives AWS S3-like identifiers, returned in response headers as `x-amz-request-id` and `x-amz-id-2` and included in all XML error responses as RequestId and HostId. The generated ID structure is designed to resemble AWS S3 request IDs and host IDs.
The request signature calculation/validation for streaming uploads was previously delayed until the request body was fully read, both for Authorization header authentication and presigned URLs.
Now, the signature is validated immediately in the authorization middlewares without reading the request body, since the signature calculation itself does not depend on the request body. Instead, only the `x-amz-content-sha256` SHA-256 hash calculation is delayed.
Integrate the new S3 checksum types in the gateway, including `SHA512`, `MD5`, `XXHASH64`, `XXHASH3`, and `XXHASH128`. This adds checksum calculation, validation, schema handling, and test coverage for the expanded checksum support.
These external packages have been used:
- `github.com/zeebo/xxh3` for `XXHASH3` and `XXHASH128`
- `github.com/cespare/xxhash/v2` for `XXHASH64`
Adjust integration tests because `aws-sdk-go-v2/service/s3` does not support automatic checksum calculation for the new checksum algorithms and returns an SDK-level error when only the checksum algorithm is provided. Only precalculated checksum values are acceptable for these checksum types.

Closes#1648Fixes#1980Fixes#1981
This PR implements browser-based POST object uploads for S3-compatible form uploads. It adds support for handling `multipart/form-data` object uploads submitted from browsers, including streaming multipart parsing so file content is not buffered in memory, POST policy decoding and evaluation, SigV4-based form authorization, and integration with the existing `PutObject` backend flow. The implementation covers the full browser POST upload path, including validation of required form fields, credential scope and request date checks, signature verification, metadata extraction from `x-amz-meta-*` fields, checksum field parsing, object tagging conversion from XML into the query-string format expected by `PutObject`, and browser-compatible success handling through `success_action_status` and `success_action_redirect`. It also wires the new flow into the router and metrics layer and adds POST-specific error handling and debug logging across policy parsing, multipart parsing, and POST authorization. AWS S3 also accepts the `redirect` form field alongside `success_action_redirect`, but since AWS has marked `redirect` as deprecated and is planning to remove it, this gateway intentionally does not support it.
Fixes#1643
`GetBucketLocation` in S3 returns empty `LocationConstraint` if the bucket is in the `us-east-1` region. This fix returns empty `LocationConstraint` if the gateway region is `us-east-1`.
Fixes#1654Fixes#1644
CreateBucket `LocationConstraint` rejects empty values with an `InvalidLocationConstraint` error.
The `us-east-1` `LocationConstraint` is considered invalid because it is the default value and must not be present in the `CreateBucketConfiguration` request body.
This PR fixes both issues by returning `InvalidLocationConstraint` in both cases.
Closes#1595
This implementation diverges from AWS S3 behavior. The `CreateBucket` request body is no longer ignored. Based on the S3 request body schema, the gateway parses only the `LocationConstraint` and `Tags` fields. If the `LocationConstraint` does not match the gateway’s region, it returns an `InvalidLocationConstraint` error.
In AWS S3, tagging during bucket creation is supported only for directory buckets. The gateway extends this support to general-purpose buckets.
If the request body is malformed, the gateway returns a `MalformedXML` error.
Closes#1518
Adds the `x-amz-object-size` header to the `PutObject` response, indicating the size of the uploaded object. This change is applied to the POSIX, Azure, and S3 proxy backends.
GetBucketLocation is being deprecated by AWS, but is still used
by some clients. We don't need any backend handlers for this since
the region is managed by the frontend. All we need is to test for
bucket existence, so we can use HeadBucket for this.
Fixes#1499
Fixes#1276
Creates the custom `s3response.CopyObjectOutput` type to handle the `LastModified` date property formatting correctly. It uses `time.RFC3339` to format the date to match the format that s3 uses.
The xml encoding for the s3.CompleteMultipartUploadOutput response
type was not producing exactly the right field names for the
expected complete multipart upload result.
This change follows the pattern we have had to do for other xml
responses to create our own type that will encode better to the
expected response.
This will change the backend.Backend interface, so plugins and
other backends will have to make the corresponding changes.
Fixes#998Closes#1125Closes#1126Closes#1127
Implements objects meta properties(Content-Disposition, Content-Language, Content-Encoding, Cache-Control, Expires) and tagging besed on the directives(metadata, tagging) in CopyObject in posix and azure backends. The properties/tagging should be coppied from the source object if "COPY" directive is provided and it should be replaced otherwise.
Changes the object copy principle in azure: instead of using the `CopyFromURL` method from azure sdk, it first loads the object then creates one, to be able to compare and store the meta properties.
Closes#1128
Adds `Content-Disposition`, `Content-Language`, `Cache-Control` and `Expires` object meta properties support in posix and azure backends.
Changes the `PutObject` and `CreateMultipartUpload` actions backend input type to custom `s3response` types to be able to store `Expires` as any string.
It is better if we let the s3response module handle the xml
formatting spec specifics, and let the backends not worry
about how to format the time fields. This should help to
prevent any future backend modifications or additions from
accidental incorrect time formatting.
Changed ListObjectsV2 and ListObjects actions return types from
*s3.ListObjects(V2)Output to s3response.ListObjects(V2)Result.
Changed the listing objects timestamp to RFC3339 to match AWS
S3 objects timestamp.
Fixes#752
The AWS spec for the create multipart upload response is:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<InitiateMultipartUploadResult>
<Bucket>string</Bucket>
<Key>string</Key>
<UploadId>string</UploadId>
</InitiateMultipartUploadResult>
So we need the return type to marshal to this xml format.
